PHILIP CUMPSTONE
THE WELSH-STICK CHAIR MAKER
Philip Cumpstone is a traditional Welsh stick-chair maker, largely self-taught and deeply rooted in his craft. He works from Temperance Cottage, his home studio nestled in Cwmllynfell — a quiet village on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. Surrounded by rugged beauty and timeless stillness, Philip’s lifestyle is a reflection of the chairs he makes: honest, functional, and steeped in heritage.
To support the growth of his artisan brand and connect with a wider audience, Philip commissioned a set of environmental documentary photographs. The goal was to authentically capture the rhythm of his home and workshop — a lived-in space where tradition and simplicity meet — helping to tell the full story behind each handmade chair.
35MM FILM | MINOLTA X-700
The use of film photography was a deliberate choice to mirror the soulful, tactile quality of Philip’s craft and the environment in which it’s rooted. Unlike digital, film uniquely captures subtle atmospheres, emotions, and light with natural softness and depth. Its grain, texture, and inherent unpredictability lend a dreamlike quality to everyday moments — conveying not just what is seen, but what is deeply felt.
